| An Interview with Andy Chase and Unfilitered Records |
by Carol Pittman Feb. 27, 2008 | "If you believe in something strongly most likely that means you're right, but it also means most of the time you're in the minority as far as people "getting" it. Eventually the rest of the world will come around to it, but it can take years of flying under the radar...and those years are very tough on your confidence" |
CP You are involved in a multitude of projects, bands and productions such as Unfiltered Records, The Band Ivy, Brookville, Paco, The Postmarks and Tahiti 80. What is your current project and are you working on any new projects?
Andy I produced and mixed the new Juliana Hatfield album this past year (2007), which is coming out this summer (2008). I am also almost finished producing/mixing the new Trashcan Sinatras record. I just finished the new Brookville album, which has Pedro from Tahiti 80 co producing with me. Pedro and Raphael from the band are Brookville's rhythm section, and along with me and Bruce Drsicoll we're recording as a 4-piece band. I have also been overseeing the releases of both The Postmarks and The Grey Race debut albums (both of which I mixed) on my label Unfiltered Records |

| | | | CP What is next for Andy Chase and are there any new tours planned for The Band Ivy?
Andy Ivy's been in the studio off and on the past year working on our new album. We are about half way finished with it. It's been slow going because me and Adam have been so preoccupied with our other projects. But even after 5+ albums we're still pretty committed, which is nice. So we're making headway and should be finished by the end of the summer. Probably means we're looking at a 2009 release and then some touring then as well. |

CP You have established a faithful and loyal fan following that seem to be deeply touched and inspired by your music. What do you feel this strong connection between you and your fan base?
Andy I think there's always a small segment of music fans who appreciate mellow, melodic, atmospheric music and the ones who have discovered my stuff (as well as the things I've either signed or siimply produced) seem to really connect. Many have emailed me how they really love putting on headphones and hearing a whole three dimensional world come alive - and that's exactly what I used to flip over before I was making my own music, so I love when people acknowledge this to me. Most pop music today isn't about that kind of detail and experience, so the few who discover this in my stuff seem to stick around for a while and remain loyal |
| CP You seem to have this continual and fluid creative flow that many in the industry respect and even revere. What advice can you give to new artists?
Andy Oh man, my lessons are so counter productive. If you believe in something strongly most likely that means you're right, but it also means most of the time you're in the minority as far as people "getting" it. Eventually the rest of the world will come around to it, but it can take years of flying under the radar...and those years are very tough on your confidence. |
