Aurora Awards

About the Aurora Awards

Since time began the invisible creative forces that power our universe have illuminated the polar darkness with a phenomenon called the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis. This same phenomenon also occurs in the Antarctic sky of the Southern Hemisphere as well, called the Aurora Australis. These majestic stardust curtains have transfixed their global audiences with their majestic displays of celestial color and light.
The Aurora Awards celebrates this same ability of media creators around the world by recognizing this same ability to captivate audiences by their creative displays of color and light. Competitors come from the independent, corporate, and freelance production groups, advertising agencies, broadcast stations, large and small.

The Aurora Awards is a international competition designed to recognize excellence in the film and video industries. It specifically targets products, programs and commercials that would not normally have the opportunity to compete on a national level, by focusing on non-national commercials, regional or special interest entertainment and corporate sponsored film and video. Entries have come from across the US, and abroad. such as Russia, Denmark, Hong Kong, Germany, Australia, Mexico, etc.

Judging

The judging functions are performed by panels of working film and video professionals that are set up in major cities across the country. Most are writers, producers or directors who are previous award winners. Judges with specific proficiencies are matched with specific categories; for example music composers sit on the original music panels.
The basic premise of the judging structure for the Aurora Awards is based on the importance of receiving the endorsement of your peers to verify your work is outstanding. Programs are judged on a fixed scale in areas of creativity, message effectiveness and technical excellence. Added together this provides a score that is measured against an absolute scale to determine if the program is award worthy or not. Using this method there could be several winners in one category or none at all. Overall scores from each panel are also compared to a statistical model to see if there is a consistency and fairness in each panel. If there
appears to be a problem, the tapes may be sent to a second panel to assure a consistent and fair judging process.

The Awards

Winners may be awarded a "Platinum Best of Show" or a "Gold Award". The Best of show is the highest honor given. Only about one in ten receive this honor, while about two out of ten receive the Gold Award

The Statue

The Aurora statue itself was commissioned specifically for the competition by a nationally renowned sculptor. Its strong vertical lines and flowing form were designed to embody the creative reach for higher ground. On its pedestal, the Aurora stands just over fourteen inches tall and weighs about five pounds.

The Certificates

The Aurora certificates are also custom designed. Each is individually embossed and foiled with a holographic film that gives the three dimensional look unique to this competition.

And Coming Soon...

The Aurora Awards are in the process of commissioning other items for use in celebrating your achievement and establishing you as an industry leader. Watch here for further news.

The Aurora Awards Offers You
a Chance to Receive the Recognition You Deserve:

Dear Media Colleague,
Welcome to the world of the Aurora Awards. A place where you have the opportunity to obtain an independent endorsement to the quality and professionalism of your work. Media professionals have entered and won Aurora Awards, and then reaped the benefits.

A Meaningful Award...
The Aurora is hard to win, no question. We did that because the Aurora Award has to mean something! When you win an Aurora, the prestige and credibility factors for you are extremely high. For twelve years we have worked to establish that reputation. Every year we hear from people who have won other "give away" competitions who didn't win an Aurora. Rest assured that Aurora judging is stringent.
Don't be discouraged from trying, though. With an Aurora entry, you are not competing against peers with potentially a much bigger budget than yours - you are competing against an absolute threshold of excellence. If your piece meets all the judging criteria, artistic and technical, to a certain high, but attainable, level, then you will win!

The Aurora Awards are not a "buy an award" video competition. When you win an Aurora, you know you've made something good.

The 7 Benefits for Highly Creative People

The Aurora Award is a prestigious award that many feel has the industry's most beautiful statue, (but then they say the same thing about our certificates too!) and just winning, and looking at that statue on your desk, is going to feel fantastic. Some who enter the Aurora Awards do it for just that reason alone, and they are perfectly content.
But some of our top entrants have also been actively using the Aurora to directly market and promote themselves with great effect. They follow up an Aurora win with weeks or months of Aurora-based marketing, effectively giving themselves larger-than-life stature to clients and prospective clients, using that magic endorsement from a third-party industry giant.

If you have not been doing this, you have lost loads of potential income, and opportunities, as well.

So here's...

Benefit Number One:
Marketing Tools.
With your win, you will have access to an array of marketing and recognition tools: statues, certificates, lapel pins, and other personalized winners' items coming soon. These tools on your desk or in your foyer speak volumes without having to say anything.

Our clients are thrilled when they win an Aurora Award. After presenting the statue, we've witnessed many "acceptance speeches" as they hold their Aurora proudly in the air. It's great for our production company to be recognized, but it's even better when we get to showcase our clients!
Robin Jackson
Production Manager
TVC Productions, Branson, Missouri

Benefit Number Two:
Client and Crew Sharing. When you win, clients and crew associated with your project can also order statues and certificates and lapel pins.  Here's the first third-party, industry giant marketing tool and it is a powerful one.  Giving them to clients, and crew to show appreciation, can help build valuable loyalty.

We enter primarily to reward our creatives. It's our way of saying "good job... we like what you did."

Benefit Number Three:  Your Website Link Included on Our Online Winners' List. Our winners have long been included in a list on our website. We have been contacted by companies telling us they have received new projects because a potential client found their company listed on our site; but now, we are taking it one giant step further. Aurora Award winners' listings will now include a hotlink directly to your website!
Potential clients are at your website in two clicks, with your contact information right in front of them - ready to believe in your abilities!

Benefit Number Four:
Official Project Feedback.
Every Aurora Award entrant will get a judges' feedback notification with a tally of your work's strengths and areas for improvement. Any comments the judges may provide can also be used as printed endorsements in your own literature.
That ought to get you some attention!

The Aurora Awards really stand out in the field of video competition because they actually give valuable feedback to the producers about the quality of various components of the finished movie. Both the strengths and weaknesses are identified and that information is necessary to determine where we can do better and what we should amplify.

Benefit Number Five:
Creative Minute E-Bulletin. This informative little e-zine is packed with years of wisdom not just in contest-winning techniques, but in all aspects of independent production, development, and marketing, as well as announcements of enhancements and news in the Aurora Awards program. Valued at $49.95 per year, it is available to everyone, regardless of whether you enter the Aurora Awards competition or not, for a limited time, absolutely free as a courtesy to all those who explore the Aurora Awards.

Benefit Number Six:
Hit-the-Deadline Discount. All who meet the May 25 entry deadline will get a courtesy discount of $10 off the $70 entry fee, leaving you paying lasts year's $60 fee per entry. Since most of our entries come as third, fourth, or fifth entries (or more) for a single project in different categories, this "little" discount actually adds up nicely foryou!

We were pleasantly surprised how easy it was to enter and how much publicity we have gained from being a winner.

News Director
News 20, St. Louis, Missouri

Benefit Number Seven:
Sneak Peeks at Cutting-Edge Media.
Many of our former winners come back to serve as members of our judging panels, which allows them to see what is media producers are currently doing across the country, (entries are not judged in their own state) It can be a great source of creative ideas for your own work. Here's what one judge said:

Judging the Auroras is an honor, and a genuine pleasure. Yes, I am very busy, but I have judged some truly magnificent pieces, and I have never regretted the time spent viewing entrants' work and getting new ideas.
A.L. Card
Freelance Film Composer
Orem, Utah

Bonus Benefit For Student Entrants:
Students Get to Enter 50% off. We at the Aurora Awards program believe in our younger colleagues, and we want them to enter the professional world with our accolades behind them, if they "make the grade". (Available only to entries within the "Student" category, not to additional category entries.)

I think the Aurora Awards has it all over many similar competitions in it's diversity of categories. It allows film makers who have minimal budgets to enter their work in a category that will likely have work produced under similar conditions and limitations. It's also helpful having your work judged under the auspices of the intended audience, that part of the judging criteria will be based on knowing the intended audience is classroom students, for example, and not a general audience.
